Garden security: Why is it important?

Physical security is very important to humans. It keeps them and their families safe, while deterring attackers from inflicting harm. The level of security that people provide for their households largely determines the safety and protection of their homes and families.

Garden security plays an important role in implementing a complete security plan for a home. Before the garage, the garden is the easiest part of the house that a burglar or intruder can gain access to. If a burglar can enter a garden and gain access to it without catching anyone’s attention, then he can easily find a way to bypass the household security.

Garden security can either increase or reduce the risk of household burglary. Burglars often target gardens and sheds because these offer valuable plants, expensive garden furniture, tools, and equipment. While plants are expensive and fetch a higher selling value, tools found in sheds can even help burglars perform their unlawful activities.

Unknown and taken for granted by many, gardens offer cover for burglars who use tall hedges and shrubbery as their hiding places. Overgrown bushes and trees can offer good hiding places for burglars and intruders who might be surveying a household prior to their attack.

To ensure garden security, some simple measures can be done initially. For one, fences can be installed to provide an initial level of security not only for the garden but for the entire household as well. Pointed fences are available in the market, and can be easily fabricated. A fenced house will have less chances of being attacked, compared to house without fences. If fences have already been installed, check their condition, including the gate, which should be locked or bolted at all times. If fences need repair work, then doing so will be a good thing.

Another simple measure that can be done is by planting thorny hedges along the garden’s fence. These hedges can also keep intruders away and will provide extra protection for the house. However, overgrown plants like bushes or tall hedges should be cut back to lessen the chances of burglars having access to easy hiding places.

Other simple measures to garden security are to use gravel on paths as this can alert whoever is inside the house that someone is in the garden. Lighting is also very important, as light has been proven to deter criminal activities. Outdoor lighting can ensure garden security and this is a good deterrent to burglars. There are energy saving lighting materials that use light as sensor, they switch on when it gets dark and shuts off when as soon as it dawns.

Lastly, garden furniture and other ornaments should not be left outside, unless they are secured or locked in position. Such items can easily attract attention and make a house an easy target for burglars on the lookout, unless your garden is well hidden from view and any passers by.
