Security Marking
The best alarm systems and even the physical presence of security personnel sometimes cannot deter determined thieves whose only intention is obtaining your valuables, no matter what they need to do in order to get what they want. In case you do come across a situation where despite your best efforts burglars have made away with your personal belongings the best way to be able to track it and get it back is by ensuring that you get security marking done on all your valuables.
Often the police departments around the world recover a large amount of property and stolen goods but have no way of identifying what belongs to whom, unless they have a complaint filed with them with details of the stolen material. That is again possible only if the goods are recovered within local limits as sometimes stolen goods can easily make their way through to different counties and countries even and there is no way of tracing it back to the owner.
There are a lot of options made available for people when it comes to security marking of assets. You could choose a simple marker such as a UV pen. The mark is visible under a UV lamp and the item can easily be identified if you leave a distinct marking that can help you identify it. However, since UV marking fades after a certain time, it may not be very effective if your valuables are located two or three years after they were stolen.
Engraving is another way of security marking, but you have to careful not to damage the property. Etching, engraving, punching and ceramic markings are used where suitable depending on the surface on which the marking needs to be done. If your marking is visible enough, that is enough of a deterrent as thieves are well aware that there is no easy way for them to sell on or dispose of an item which has security marking on it.
If you are not too keen on using a permanent visible ink to mark your assets, there are companies, which make markers with a unique DNA code with microdots. This is a clear marking which can be painted on the surface of the item and it is visible only under ultra-violet light.
Modern technology has made it possible to have codes inbuilt into electronic goods such as DVD players, televisions etc. But you may have to bear with the slight inconvenience of remembering the codes and entering it every time you switch them on. It is definitely a good idea to list out all the assets along with details of the security marking, to help you and the police identify your property and get back what actually belongs to you.
