X10 Security Systems

X10 security system is a home automation networking that has been used for the last 20 years or more. Developed initially by Pico Electronics of Scotland, it started as a device used in home automation systems. The X10 system is simple and yet interesting. It uses various transmitters and receivers to exchange signals using the existing electrical wiring in a house. The signals, which are sent through RF bursts, contain digital information. The technology has brought new opportunities in remote controlling a variety of gadgets in the home, as long as they are plugged into the electrical wiring.

X10 security systems: How do they work?

A simple X10 security system is composed of a palm pad, which also serves as the remote control, a transceiver, and a module.

  • The palm pad acts as the remote control, and used to turn the device on and off, and to soften or brighten the lamp and wall switch modules. It is usually a battery powered, radio frequency (RF) transmitter, and is capable of controlling all the 256 house-unit codes, though it can only access one code at a given time.
  • The transceiver (short for transmitter/receiver) is an AC-powered device using an integrated antenna. Its functions include: receive the X10 RF commands, transmit the X10 power line prompts, and to function as an appliance module. The transceiver receives the RF commands from the palm pad/remote control, and then transmits these signals through the house wiring to the lamp module.
  • Lastly, the lamp module is a receiver that is not capable of transmitting any signal back to the transceiver. It acts as a switch that can either dim or brighten a light. This module can only control incandescent lamps. It cannot control fluorescent lamps, fans, and other devices with appliance modules.

The technology of X10 in relation to security combines easy home automation, wireless control, and round-the-clock monitoring of the entire household. X10 security system allows live monitoring of the entire household including outdoor areas like patios, gardens, sheds, and garages. The simplest X10 security can be in the form of a camera system that can be installed in the house for the simplest reason like baby monitoring, to the more complex ones like surveillance and tracking.

A more complex X10 system may involve camera systems with robotic motion sensor and floodlights. These products are all simple and easy to install. Once the camera is mounted and turned on, it can already be connected to a video receiver, and the camera system starts working. X10 security systems are designed to ensure easier monitoring of a house, an office, or even a warehouse. These security systems allow easy monitoring and tracking using simple tools that are easy to install and use.
